History

A seedling selected from a nursery tree by F.M. Owens (Thompson and Young, 1985).

Comments

'Owens' is a large, thick-shelled nut with a low percent kernel. Yields have been consistent, but unfortunately kernel color is too dark and quality too poor for this cultivar to have commercial potential.

Production record of test trees beginning in year planted

'Owens' production from the Ponder Variety Grove test. Each colored line represents the yearly production in pounds of nuts from an individual tree beginning the year planted.

*Note the nice regular production from these trees. At 0.22, 'Owens' has one of the lowest alternate bearing indexes of any cultivar we have tested.

Alternate Bearing Intensity = 0.22
