An Alabama selection that is likely an 'Elliott' seedling.


This is likely an 'Elliott' seedling, but nut size is larger than 'Elliott'. Comes to us from Dr. Bill Goff who noted its ability to produce good yields with minimal care and no sprays. We have not seen any scab on this cultivar in our sprayed orchard. Yields were low as a young tree, and so far yields have been unimpressive.

My biggest question with this cultivar is whether larger than 'Elliott' size in a round nut is desirable. 'Elliott' is attractive, but this kernel, to me, is not attractive. Even with its good percent kernel, the kernel is often cupped and looks less well-filled. This nut is also hard to crack out into whole halves as it is very tightly filled within the nut. Currently I view it as only having potential for low-input/organic plantings, but I would recommend 'McMillan' and 'Amling' above this cultivar. We discontinued testing of this cultivar in 2013 due to the poor kernel quality.
